Planning

A website brief your service business can actually use

Turn a vague website project into a clear brief using the enquiries, service areas and customer questions your business already knows.

A website brief can begin with three recent enquiries. Choose one that became good work, one that was a poor fit and one that went quiet. Remove personal details, then write down what each person needed to know before contacting you. Those examples usually explain more than a long list of features.

For an Australian service business, the important differences may be whether you travel to a customer's property, work remotely, cover a defined service area or accept larger projects interstate. A visitor should be able to recognise the right route without guessing.

Describe the decision before the pages

Write one sentence about the customer: “A property manager needs to arrange a maintenance visit and supply access instructions.” Then list the questions that stand between that person and an enquiry. Coverage, types of work, availability, useful photographs and the next step may all matter. This becomes the starting point for your page structure.

Bring the difficult questions too. If an enquiry needs inspection before a quote, say that. If your business does not offer emergency attendance, avoid a design that makes every contact option look like an emergency hotline. Clear expectations make the site easier for both customers and staff.

Give the designer something real to work with

Do not put passwords into the brief. A list of account owners is enough for planning. Decide who will approve copy and who can confirm operational details; those may be different people.

Set a useful acceptance check

Before signing off, ask someone unfamiliar with the business to find the right service, decide whether you cover their area and send a test enquiry on a phone. Have the receiving staff member confirm what arrived and whether it is enough to act on. A handsome homepage is only one part of the job.

The Australian Government's website setup guide provides a useful starting checklist. For your project, add the real customer tasks above. Faith Forge Labs can turn that material into a business website plan with a manageable first release.
