Moving your website: keep a map of the pages people use

Plan existing URLs, enquiries and useful content before replacing a business website.

A rebuild can accidentally remove the page a repeat customer has bookmarked. The homepage looks new, but an old service link in an email leads to an error. A simple page map reduces that risk.

Before moving an Australian business site, list its important current URLs and what each will become. Include service pages, articles, downloadable resources and contact routes. Ask staff which links they send to customers; analytics alone may not show every useful page.

Choose destinations deliberately

Keep an existing URL where it still describes the content well. When a URL must change, choose a relevant replacement. Sending every old page to the homepage can leave visitors searching again for the information they expected.

Google's site-move guidance describes mapping and redirects. It also makes clear that search processing takes time. A technically correct migration should not be sold as a promise of immediate ranking stability.

Include the business processes

Forms, booking tools, payment links and staff notifications need their own checks. Confirm which system will receive new enquiries during the move and how staff will recognise a test submission.

Keep existing email arrangements explicit. Changing web hosting and changing business email are separate pieces of work, even when one supplier currently provides both. Agree what is in scope before anyone changes settings.

Have a release and recovery plan

Decide who approves the switch, what must pass beforehand and what would justify restoring the previous version. After release, check representative old URLs, the new pages and the enquiry journey over the real public address.

Our website care and migration work includes a scoped review before replacement. Useful existing content should inform the new site, not disappear merely because the design has changed.
