Customer enquiries

A customer enquiry should not become a surprise mailing-list subscription

Keep requested replies and optional marketing choices clear in forms and follow-up workflows.

A customer asks whether you can repair something. They expect a reply about the repair. Adding their address to a promotion sequence at the same time can damage trust, even when the website form looks polished.

Plan the requested conversation and optional marketing separately. A quote confirmation, an answer to a question and a newsletter signup have different purposes. Your forms and connected systems should preserve those differences.

Make the choice easy to understand

If you offer an optional newsletter, explain what the person will receive and who sends it. Keep the choice separate from submitting the enquiry. Avoid an ambiguous “keep me updated” label that might mean either job progress or advertising.

The ACMA's spam guidance explains consent, sender identification and unsubscribe requirements for marketing messages. Get advice on your particular communications plan, especially if you intend to rely on inferred consent.

Check what happens after the form

The website may be only the first link. A contact can pass to a CRM, an email platform and a sales automation tool. Test whether a contact who declines marketing remains excluded in every connected system. A later import should not silently undo that choice.

Keep the information needed to explain a marketing choice: when it was made, through which form and the wording shown at the time. Do not collect extra personal information merely because your software offers more fields.

Practise stopping the messages

Use a test contact to subscribe, unsubscribe and submit a new service enquiry afterwards. The new enquiry should receive an appropriate response without automatically restarting the marketing sequence. Check staff procedures as well as automation.

If your existing mailing list has uncertain consent history, do not assume a website rebuild fixes it. Separate the technical migration from the decision about which contacts may receive campaigns. Faith Forge Labs can implement the agreed follow-up workflow and make its behaviour visible in testing.
