Questions to settle before rebuilding an Australian checkout
Confirm price presentation, delivery coverage and failed-payment handling before approving a new shop.
A checkout project often begins with colour choices and product photographs. The more expensive surprises tend to sit elsewhere: a freight rule that nobody documented, a charge shown too late or a payment that succeeds while the order appears to fail.
Bring your actual selling arrangements to the project. Which customers are consumers, which are trade accounts, and where will you deliver? Your accountant or adviser should confirm the applicable tax and price treatment before those rules are configured.
Look at the whole price journey
The ACCC's price-display guidance covers total prices and unavoidable charges. Treat that as an input to a professional review of your own sales flow. A developer can implement an agreed rule; changing a setting is not a legal assessment.
Walk through a sample basket from product page to receipt. Write down where delivery, tax and any other charge first appears. Check mobile screens too. A total that is visible only after an accordion expands can be easy for a customer to miss.
Use awkward addresses in testing
Test a metropolitan address, a regional destination, a post office box if relevant and an address outside your coverage. Avoid accepting payment for an order that your dispatch process cannot fulfil. If freight needs a manual quote, make that route explicit before the customer pays.
Decide what happens when a customer refreshes, returns from a payment provider or presses the payment button twice. Payment confirmation should be matched to one order. Failed or uncertain transactions need a staff review route so the customer is not simply asked to try paying again.
Prepare support alongside launch
The team answering order questions needs to find the order, payment reference and delivery status without requesting full card details. Agree who can cancel, refund or amend an order and which changes the customer will be told about.
Faith Forge Labs builds online stores and checkout connections around those real operating rules. Start with a small set of representative orders and make them part of the acceptance plan.
